The Story

Avon began as a door-to-door book salesman, David H. McConnell. He employed a well-known trick to get women to listen. Avon quickly made more money than it did from its books. This allowed Avon to expand its facilities and create new products, like cosmetics, skincare and even men's fragrances. Avon was able to invest in philanthropic projects such as helping women get jobs and fighting domestic abuse.

The Characters

Avon Publications began life in 1941 as a paperback publisher and was one of the first publishers of the historical romance genre. The publisher (now part of Harper Collins) is renowned for bringing the best in commercial fiction to the largest possible audience.

Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company, initially focusing on reprints in pocket-sized paperbacks. They referred to it as Avon. Avon was a major rival to Pocket Books, and its early Avons resembled Pocket's. Pocket Books tried to bring a lawsuit against Avon without success.

Avon could then concentrate on the popular market and ensure that each new title was well received. This led to the release of ghost stories, sexually provocative romantic stories, and fantasy novels that were a stark contrast to the more literary Pocket competition.

Avon also published digest-sized paperbacks in series such as Modern Short Story Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader, a range which still attracts interest to this day. These were often accompanied by film tie-in editions. Avon also published hardcover and non-romance paperbacks but these were transferred to the Hearst Corporation's other publisher Morrow following the time Hearst purchased Avon in 1959.

In this book, Darrow creates an interesting background story for Avon and emulates the bantering style of dialogue that Blake's 7 was known for fairly well but unless you are a fan of the show it's probably not for you. The story revolves around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and dislike for their cowardice and ruthlessness.

There are some truly captivating scenes as Avon is forced to make the difficult choices to protect his team and this shows his softer side. The characters have plenty of depth, and each one has a distinct persona that makes them relatable. This is a story you'll want to read more of. The writing is flawless, and the narrative is a true reflection of the place. It's an amazing piece of writing by an author at the top of her game.

The Setting

Avon publishes a variety of commercial fiction including historical romance. Originally a paperback publisher, Avon Publications pioneered the modern romance genre and is now an imprint of HarperCollins. Avon romance novels dominated bestseller lists in the early 1970s. This showed the market potential of the genre. The company would later become a household brand in the romance field and also compete with Mills & Boon as the house which built the bodice ripper. Kathleen Woodiwiss is among the company's stable. Rosemary Rogers and Elizabeth George are also included.

In its early years, the company's focus on "popular appeal", led to the publication of fiction with a supernatural theme ghost stories, and sexually suggestive love stories. This was a vast away from the more literary Pocket Books competition. The company also published digest paperbacks, such as Murder Mystery Monthly or Modern Short Story Magazine. Collectors today are enthralled by some of these early editions.

Manko's fair treatment of Avon is commendable. She gives the erstwhile California Perfume Company credit for breaking away from the traditional economic role imposed on women in 19th and 20th century America However, she exposes the ways in which its rhetoric covered up what was really a radical economic concept by wrapping it in ideals of respectability and domesticity.

Alongside a wide selection of women's fiction, Avon also has a distinct line in crime and thrillers and a growing list of children's books. The most popular authors such as CL Taylor, Katerina Diamond and many other authors are published by Avon.

Avon's commitment to bring the best of commercial fiction to the broadest possible audience continues to be the case today. Avon books are innovative with a wide range of characters and boast some of the brightest talent in contemporary literature. The company also has a long-standing and proud tradition of publishing the best in historical fiction, particularly in the field of historical romance. Avon, often referred to by writers such as Tessa Dare or Lisa Kleypas as the house that invented the genre of historical romance and is still the publisher they choose.

The Author

Avon Books, the division of HarperCollins that publishes romance novels, was founded as a publisher of paperback books in 1941. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams created them to create a rival to Pocket Books. They hired brother and sister writers to form a group of writers known as "Love's Leading Ladies" that included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and others. The early Avons were similar to pocketbooks that were in use and were the subject of a lawsuit brought by Pocket Books. However, they were able to succeed due to their emphasis on popular appeal.

In the 1950s, Avon was selling millions of books a year. Avon's colorful covers and mass appeal allowed them to market pulp fiction that mainstream publishers would have snubbed. They were so successful, in actual, that the Hearst Corporation bought them in 1959.

The Hearst Corporation changed the direction of Avon's publications by adding more literary works to their line. Avon began to release digest-format magazines in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly or Modern Short Story Monthly. Some of these are highly prized today for their quality and rarity.

The sexually explicit novel The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, published in 1972, marked a change in Avon's direction. Avon would go on to publish several more sexy romances that included The Wolf and the Dove in 1974 and Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet Savage Love later. These new releases made earlier avon book December romances more romantic with their purple-prosed love scenes appear tame.

In the end, Avon would become a leader in the romance industry and even invented the bodice ripper. In the 1970s, Avon was publishing numerous romance novels that earned and remained on bestseller lists. This trend continued in the new millennium, with Avon publishing authors such as Lisa Kleypas and Connie Mason.

Welcome-Kit-1.pngAvon has recently added to its catalog with the introduction of the brand new Avon Impulse imprint which will publish e-books on a weekly basis.
