When you enter this old-school West Village shop, the scent of freshly coffee beans fills your nostrils. The shelves are lined with jars and bags of dark brown beans, with tea-making equipment, coffee accessories and sugar.

Originally opened in 1907, Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrant Patsy Albanese. Greenwich Village at the time was witnessing a surge of Italian immigrants, who established businesses to cater to their dietary needs. Albanese named her shop after the renowned Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) - - a drink that was that was so well-known at the time that even the Pope consumed it.

Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from around the world at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. Porto Rico also roasts its own beans and provides wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Sey Coffee

Sey Coffee, a coffee roaster and shop is located on Grattan Street, in Morgantown. The neighborhood, which is part of Brooklyn's Bushwick district is situated on Grattan Street. Tobin Polk, Lance Schnorenberg and their co-founders of 33 years, began roasting coffee in a loft on the fourth floor, just across the street, in the year 2011. They called it Lofted coffee beans bulk. Local clients included Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart services Peddler and Peddler.

Sey's reliance on micro-lots -- or even whole harvests from single farmers--has earned it the acclaim of highly discerning New York City coffee aficionados. Last year they made a six-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were carefully picked at their peak ripeness, floated to get rid of any imperfections, then dry fermented for a period of 36 hours before being dried on the farm. The result is a blend with hints of berry, lemongrass and melon.

Sey's focus on holistically improving the quality of life for staff, customers, and growers extends beyond the retail store. It utilizes biodegradable disposables as well as composts to keep waste out of landfills and turning it into agents that reduce harmful greenhouse gases as well as nourish soil. It also does away with gratuity, which puts the baristas in a position to sustain their livelihoods and inspire them to focus on their craft.

La Cabra

dark-chocolate-covered-coffee-beans-retrLa Cabra, a modern specialty coffee company, was established in Aarhus in Denmark in 2012. They began with a small shop and a team of dedicated employees. Their honest and creative approach to delivering a truly exceptional coffee experience earned their acclaim not just in their hometown, but globally.

La Carba has a rigorous method of identifying their ideal beans, going through hundreds of different lots every year to find ones that are perfect for their tastes. Then, they roast them in a very light manner then dial them in to achieve their desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees a more vibrant flavor and clarity.

The East Village store opened last October with a sleek, minimalist design. It's been praised by global coffee aficionados for its exacting pour overs and baked goods that are overseen by head baker Jared Sexton, Cafe Coffee beans who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.

The shop uses a La Marzocco Modbar as well as the cups, plates and bowls are made by Wurtz ceramics, a father and son studio located in Horsens. In a recent interview Atlanta Coffee Shops General Manager Ian Walla revealed that La Cabra serves 250 different coffees every day and typically has seven or eight varieties available at any one time.

The Plant Coffee Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant is the only multi-unit retailer of coffee which roasts on-site and brews on demand, with each cup of coffee roasted and brewed according to your requirements in less than a minute. It scour the globe for the highest-grade specialty beans that are directly sourced to give customers the option of the choice and quality.

Their roaster on site is a fluid bed machine, which is different from the traditional drum machines commonly found in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown in a heated box with high-velocity air, which is circulated. This keeps the beans suspended and allows for a consistent roasting rate.

I tried the Sumatran Coffee and it was velvety and rich with a velvety flavor. Dark chocolate was evident in the aroma and as you sipped the coffee you could smell subtle citrus fruit flavors.

The roasted coffee is then whisked to the store's Eversys super-automatic brewing systems and the coffee is brewed according to your preferences in less than a minute. Customers can choose from a variety of single origins and a wide range of blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Cafe Coffee beans was founded in 2012 behind a barbershop, using a single espresso machine. It has since developed into a burgeoning coffee roastery, whose coffee beans are sold in top cafes, cafe Coffee Beans restaurants, and home brewers in every city. Parlor is dedicated to sourcing the highest-quality beans around the globe, each of which is a long, arduous journey before arriving in the roasters.

In their own words in their own words, they "have an unstoppable passion for craft and a belief that great coffee should be available to anyone." They achieve that by creating a simple area on a residential street. Think compost bins, chalkboards handmade up-cycled items, and a minimalist deco.

They roast their own blends (there were six when I was there) and single-origins. But they also hold cuppings on Sundays, which are open to the general public. Think of it as a tasting room for breweries. You can smell and taste the ground beans, from chocolaty to earthy (one was almost tomato-like!). It's a little off the beaten path, but worth the trip.
